Federal Election 2004

Let's use our voices and our votes in the forthcoming Federal election on October 9. Let's act to change government policy. The imprisonment of children and their families in our immigration detention centres must stop. At the start of this campaign, 86 children remain locked up and under guard. Take a moment to reflect on just a few examples of the harm we have done to these children through their detention. Enough is enough!

Take part in our campaign to hand out 20,000 flowers of hope on election day.

The Justice Project is targeting candidates in 35 seats across Australia for the 2004 Federal Election. Ranking Cards for each electorate are now available.

A Just Australia has also released candidate rankings...

Voting enrolment

The electoral roll has closed, but if you have missed out on registering, it is not too late to help out in the electorate where you live: volunteer through The Justice Project.

Not sure which electorate you are in? Search here...

Check that you are enrolled to vote or update your details through the Australian Electoral Commission web site.

What to ask for

Whenever you are in contact with an electoral candidate these are three actions ChilOut is calling for:

Find out where people seeking YOUR vote sit on these key issues.

Talk to talk-back, write to the editor

The last weekend of August saw the Children overboard story reported from asylum seekers first hand accounts, in papers and Channel Nine Sunday program. Now is a great time to write letters to the editor (national, metropolitan and local), phone talk back radio (not just the ABC) and keep this issue on the boil. PS. If you mention your candidate/sitting member's name in the letter, it gets picked up by media monitoring services and lands, almost first thing, on their desk.

Sign up for the Charter for a Democratic Australia

This is an initiative of North Shore Peace and Democracy: The charter aims to bring back our democracy, by the simple measure of asking politicians and others to sign up to its principles. The draft below has been revised following a number of comments. In order to put pressure on the pollies to sign up, we need as many ordinary people (electors!) as possible to sign up to the principles first.

The aim is then to publish the Charter widely, and to ask politicians to sign up - or tell us which of the principles in the Charter they cannot support, so we can publicise that! We would like to try and do that if possible before the election. Sign up...

Exposed to sun without protection.
Allowed to go hungry.
Provided with dirty, unhygenic toilets/bathrooms.
Terrified by verbal and physical abuse.
Exposed to horrific violence.
Locked up for years, sometimes in isolation.
Made suicidal through despair.
86 children still in detention.

If a parent treats a child like this, it's criminal.
When the government treats a child like this, it's policy.
Mr Howard, we didn't elect you to lock up little children.

Give your vote to someone WHO CARES
