How the children are counted

ChilOut counts all children in immigration detention, regardless of their manner of arrival (plane or boat), reason for detention (e.g. seeking asylum, breach of visa conditions), or location of detention (mainland, Christmas Island or Nauru) or style of detention (e.g. high security detention centre, housing project or other places of detention ).

There are several young men at Baxter detention centre who were detained when they were unaccompanied children, but are now over 18 years and therefore not included in our statistics.

Other Detention

As of 29 June 2005, there were 6 children whose homes are declared places of detention, or are in other places of detention which can include Motel, Hospital, correctional facility or foster care detention. Another variant is "harbour detention",where three boys had been detained on their boat.

Unaccompanied children

As of 29 June there is one unacompanied boy in Baxter.
