Labor probe on Woomera
By Julie-Anne Davies, The Age, March 25, 2002.
The newly elected South Australian Labor Government will investigate the Woomera child abuse claims made by two Melbourne social workers if the reports are found to fall within SA's child protection laws.
Social Justice Minister Stephanie Key said in a statement to The Age yesterday that she was concerned about the wellbeing of children in Woomera detention centre but was awaiting legal advice on whether the notification of alleged abuse is legitimate under SA law.
If the report is accepted, SA must seek Commonwealth permission to enter Woomera.
"The new government in South Australia will meet its responsibilities in regards to all children in accordance with the Children's Protection Act," Ms Key's statement said.
". . . it is the government's view that children should be in the care of their parents or guardians wherever that is possible and safe for the child.
"That advice has been provided consistently to the Commonwealth Government."
