Wickham Point

45km from Darwin. This site was originally intended to house workers for local industry. The site's suitability for human accommodation was questioned due to the number of midges and other insects in the swamp like conditions.
In May 2013 Immigration Minister of the day, Brendan O'Connor annoucned that families would also be detained at this location. Since the previous Government maintained children were 'not held in detnetion', a new sign was erected namng the facility an 'alternative place of detention'. A few cosmetic changes made, a shadecloth added and children were moved in. As of August 2013 we believe that around 300 people in family groups had already been moved to this site.
In December 2013 when ChilOut visited this site, the 20m double perimter electric fencing was still up, the whole place is covered in cages, heavy steel doors, a series of locks and compunds. It is no way an alternative to detention, it is in fact very prison-like. Here is ChilOut's report into the three Darwin APODs including Wickham Pt.
There are three compounds, two holding family groups and one for single adult males.
