BRIDGE FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS FOUNDATION
Asylum seekers who are issued with Bridging Visa "E"s and those asylum seekers whose cases are not finalised are allowed to live in the community, instead of being held in a detention centre, such as the one at Villawood.
These people are required to fulfil certain conditions, such as reporting to Department of Immigration offices and police stations. Asylum seekers are not given any government benefits and are not entitled to Medicare cards. In addition, they are not permitted to earn any money or to work for a community group during the period their cases are before the Courts.
For this reason, the "Bridge for Asylum Seekers Foundation" has been established to assist them to live with dignity in the community.
Mr Laurie Brereton, MP; Senator Bob Brown; Sister Susan Connolly; Dr Louise Newman; Professor Stuart Rees; Mr John Valder and Dr John Yu have agreed to be patrons.
The Uniting Church is a supporter and a bank account has been established through Uniting Care to enable donations to be made on a tax-deductible basis.
It will be possible for donations to be made on a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly basis, or by cheque to the address below.
