Blaydin Pt
This site is around 1km from the Wickham Pt detention facility, both are approximately 50 minutes drive to Darwin's CBD.
When ChilOut visited in December 2013 much of this fairly new facility was not in use, including a massive hanger and accommodation specifically built for 'processing' people who arrive directly to Australia by boat. Due to Darwin's climate, the whole facility is air conditioned, including the rooms that will not be used anywhere into the forseeable future.
Officials from DIBP and Serco advised us that this facility was state of the art and purpose built. Accommodation, like other Darwin "APODs" is in shipping containers 2.4m x 6m. There are new medical clinics, woodwork room and the like, yet the same issues remain - people are denied their freedom, they are depressed, medical care is not in line with community standards (despite the shiny, new facilities) and it is most definitely not an alternative to detention.
As of December 2013 we understand there are approximately 80 children detained here, eight are unaccompanied.
On 18 Dec 2013 ChilOut conducted a visit and released a report into detention in Darwin.
