Curtin
The Curtin Detention Centre operated between 1999 and 2002 and was widely known as the worst of the worst. This was the scene of disturbing protests, much self harm and anguish.
The site is a former RAAF base, 35km from the township of Derby (approx pop. 3,000 ) and nearly 2,500 km from Perth.
Under Howard children were detained in this location.
The ALP Government re-opened Curtin in 2010 and it was used to detain single men. One year later, former Immigration Minister Chris Bowen stated that this was the detention centre he wished to close and acknowledged its harshness.
In May 2013 the Government announced that children would again be detained at Curtin.
Zachary Steel, clinical psychologist who interviewed the families detained at Curtin described the facility as a 'psychiatric catastrophe'.
